Rejuvenation of the lips and “Smoker’s Lines”

As we age, vertical lines begin to form around the mouth, particularly on the area above the upper lip. This area does not carry a lot of fat, and the skin becomes stuck to the muscle.

The muscle around the mouth (orbicularis oris) is a sphincter muscle, which has a draw-string mechanism, affecting the vertical lines that form there. These are commonly known as “smokers lines” or “the barcode”.

The Lip Refresh rejuvenates the peri oral area (around the mouth), gives crisper definition to the vermillion border and subtle volume to the lips.

The Process

Under local anaesthetic, the skin is carefully separated from the muscle using a cannula. This reduces the muscle's ability to pull on the skin, helping to prevent the formation of vertical lines.

1. Skin Release

A thin layer of light hyaluronic acid is injected via the cannula to form a protective sheet between the skin and muscle. This enhances hydration and creates a subtle, youthful appearance without adding volume.

2. Filler Injection

  • You may experience swelling, redness, tenderness, and bruising at the injection site. Uneven swelling is normal and should balance out as it subsides. These effects typically resolve within a few days to two weeks.

  • Bruising can occur despite precautions to avoid it. If bruising happens, it will typically be apparent immediately after treatment. Bruises may change colour as they heal, from red to purple, black, green, and eventually yellow. Using Arnica and Vitamin K cream can help speed up the healing process.

  • We aim for subtle, natural results, which take 2-4 weeks to fully settle. A review can be scheduled afterward, where additional filler can be added for a fee, or, if needed, filler can be adjusted or dissolved with hyaluronidase.

  • Most patients experience minimal discomfort during the procedure. Numbing cream and local anaesthetic are used for added comfort.

  • It’s best to avoid applying makeup for 12-24 hours after your filler procedure to reduce the risk of infection or irritation at the injection site.
