For many women where this ratio is out of sync, they present wanting a more feminine appearance through facial slimming. By injecting Botox into the masseter muscle, it softens the action and decreases the muscle bulk. This results in delicate more oval appearance.

The masseter is the muscle that we use for chewing and can be found at the side of the jaw, beneath the ear. A large masseter muscle can be part of somebody’s natural anatomy or because of teeth grinding, technically known as Bruxism. The latter can be extremely painful as well as damaging to your dental arcade.

Masseter reduction, or facial slimming, is a simple and highly effective procedure, which lasts for approximately 6 months.

The extent to which the muscle is relaxed may be tailored and treatment subtle. As ever, I always work to the individual anatomy of the face.

The Process

The muscles are assessed for strength and symmetry and the extent to which the patient would like a reduction in activity. Once cleansed and sterilised, the muscle is palpated upon contraction to identify the target points of main muscle activity. Tiny needles are used to inject Botox into the points identified, ensuring optimum comfort.

  • Full effects are visible at:

    • 14 days for upper and lower face Botox.

    • 6 weeks for facial slimming.

  • Botox may initially reduce muscle activity, causing a “frozen” feeling. This usually softens over time, giving a more natural effect.

  • Avoid facials, massages, or facial treatments for 2 weeks after Botox to prevent the risk of the product moving to non-target muscles.

  • Botox can cause some muscles to relax at different rates, especially in the forehead. This can lead to certain areas being more active than others initially, but this will settle down.
