What Is Excessive Sweating (Hyperhidrosis)?
Sweating or perspiring is our body's way of cooling down when we are overheated. Hyperhidrosis is a medical condition characterised by overactive sweat glands that produce more perspiration than the body needs for proper temperature regulation.
There are two different types of Hyperhidrosis:
-
Is caused by overactive nerves in the body that signal to sweat glands for them to begin perspiration. This type of Hyperhidrosis usually affects the underarms as well as the palms of your hands and the soles of your feet.
-
On the other hand, is caused by an underlying health condition like diabetes or thyroid disorders. Women of a certain age who are going through menopause can also develop Secondary Hyperhidrosis.
Hyperhidrosis Excessive Sweating Symptoms
People with Hyperhidrosis will find that they are perspiring even during cold or cool environments. They will likely feel dampness on their hands, feet, or underarms and find that sweat stains mark their clothes.
The symptoms of excessive perspiration can feel unrelenting and impact all areas of daily life, from our professional to our personal lives. Simple things like choosing what we wear that day or shaking someone's hand can cause concern or embarrassment.
What is Botox, and How Is It Used Medically?
Botulinum Toxin, known more commonly as Botox, is a purified toxin that temporarily blocks nerve signals sent to the muscles or glands into which it is injected. Botox is commonly used in cosmetic applications to smooth out wrinkles and fine lines, such as crow's feet, but it also has many medical applications, excessive sweating being a common example.
Medically, Botox can be used to treat chronic migraines and reduce tension in muscles that certain neurological conditions can cause. Also, Botox can be used to alleviate excessive sweating (Hyperhidrosis) by preventing sweat gland activity in the area into which it is injected.
Why Choose Botox for Excessive Sweating?
Botox is non-surgical, highly effective and long-lasting. With no incisions or recovery time to worry about; you can see a reduction in sweat for 6 to 12 months. Botox gets to work quickly, reducing sweat production in a matter of days.
When Botox is injected beneath the skin, it works to temporarily stop nerve signals from being sent to sweat glands so that they can produce sweat. The result is a dramatic reduction in the amount of perspiration in the treatment areas – in this case, the underarms.
Importantly, Botox is safe. Botox only targets the sweat glands in the areas where it is injected. Our underarms only account for 2% of the sweat glands in our bodies, so normal, healthy temperature regulation will still be maintained after treatment.

What to Expect from Botox for Hyperhidrosis
Private Consultation
You will begin by meeting with Lucy at her clinic on Manchester Square for a private consultation, where you will speak about your symptoms and the results you would like to achieve. Lucy will explain the Botox treatment process and examine your underarms in order to determine the best approach for your treatment.
Treatment Preparation
On the day of the treatment, Lucy will begin by gently cleansing and sterilising the treatment area. She will then carefully apply a numbing local anaesthetic cream to your underarms to ensure the process is as comfortable as possible.
Botox Injections
Lucy will then use ultra-fine needles to administer the Botox injections, focusing on multiple points across the underarms. The Botox will begin to get to work immediately to block the nerve signals that stimulate your sweat glands.
Results and Aftercare
Lucy will provide you with specific aftercare instructions to follow that may include avoiding heat exposure and intense exercise for 24 hours. You will begin to see some minor improvements within a few days, with the full results of your treatment becoming apparent after 14 days. The reduction in sweat production should last between 6 to 12 months before you will need to arrange a maintenance appointment.

Your Botox Excessive Sweating Questions
-
Results usually last between 6 to 12 months, depending on your individual metabolism and your activity levels.
-
Lucy uses a topical numbing cream to help minimise any discomfort you may feel during the injection process. Most of our clients find the treatment to be relatively pain-free and over quickly.
-
There may be some minor side effects, including redness and tenderness at the injection site, but these are short lived, resolving within a day or so.
-
You may experience swelling, redness, tenderness, and bruising at the injection site. Uneven swelling is normal and should balance out as it subsides. These effects typically resolve within a few days to two weeks.
-
Bruising can occur despite precautions to avoid it. If bruising happens, it will typically be apparent immediately after treatment. Bruises may change colour as they heal, from red to purple, black, green, and eventually yellow. Using Arnica and Vitamin K cream can help speed up the healing process.
-
We aim for subtle, natural results, which take 2-4 weeks to fully settle. A review can be scheduled afterward, where additional filler can be added for a fee, or, if needed, filler can be adjusted or dissolved with hyaluronidase.
-
It’s best to avoid applying makeup for 12-24 hours after your filler procedure to reduce the risk of infection or irritation at the injection site.
